What is Lifestyle medicine?

dad-and-son-on-lake

Lifestyle medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on the prevention, management, and treatment of chronic diseases through evidence-based lifestyle changes.

It emphasizes the power of daily habits such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, stress management, sufficient sleep, and maintaining healthy relationships.

Unlike traditional medicine, which often relies on medications or surgical interventions, lifestyle medicine empowers individuals to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of disease, such as poor nutrition, inactivity, and high stress.

The goal is to improve overall well-being, prevent disease, and enhance quality of life by making sustainable changes that support long-term health.

Our Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner Charlotte Newton can help you to get on track with sustainable changes to achieve a more fulfilling, happy and structured life.

What information will be collected at the lifestyle Medicine consultation?

In a lifestyle medicine consultation, the primary focus is on understanding the patient’s daily habits, behaviors, and overall lifestyle to guide interventions that improve health.

The specific information collected usually includes Personal and Medical History, Diet and Nutrition, Physical Activity and Exercise habits, Sleep Patterns, Level of Stress and Mental Health status, Substance Use, Behavioral and Habit Patterns, Health Goals and Expectations. Then we shall carry out a Physical Examination assessing breathing mechanics and general mobility/restriction within the body.

The aim is to gain a holistic understanding of the patient’s lifestyle to help tailor interventions in diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other areas that can optimize health and prevent or manage chronic conditions.

You’ll receive a concise plan broken down into practical steps that you can implement straight away.

What happens after the initial consultation?

Depending on your tailored plan we will schedule to see you again over the coming months to provide continued support, motivation and refinement of your plan. These sessions will vary depending on your goals and focus.

These sessions may include ongoing education and support, behavioral change strategies, hands on osteopathic treatment to aid in managing stress/re balancing the nervous system as well as exercise prescription e.g. to improve breathing mechanics.

These follow up sessions are available both in person and online depending on what suits you.
